Book too much for one reader

An unhappy reading experience?

Letter from Gordon Ostrand:

I recently read Auto da Fé (or The Blinding) by Elias Canetti and I found it a particularly terrifying and distressing story. The characters in it are all extremely disturbing, often horrifying, personalities. I found the experiencing of reading this book harrowing and most upsetting. I have not slept well since I started reading it and have become much more nervous in my daytime dealings. Do you think I might have a case for emotional distress against the publishers?

Felicity answers:

No. Pull yourself together.
