New laws for self-assembly manufacturers

For anyone who has struggled in vain to put together pre-fabricated products, some measure of consolation may be to hand

Details were today leaked concerning new regulations that are being discussed which would oblige the directors and senior executives of any company that makes self-assembly ('flat-pack') products to prove that they can follow their own instructions.

The source said that draft legislation was already on the table and was being pushed forward at a very high level. Although the precise details remain unclear, one suggestion was that there would be random inspections with senior employees being asked to demonstrate the ease or difficulty with which they were able assemble their own product. “I think this is an excellent idea.” said Eoin Kelly of the Retail Consumer Group CustomAction. “We think it should go further and these demonstrations ought to be filmed and posted online. And why stop there? Perhaps food makers and supermarket chains might be required to show that they can successfully open their own packaging. Anything that compels these companies to spare a thought for their long suffering customers has to be a good thing”
