A number of local government agencies as well as tourism and other business lobby groups are said to be putting pressure on the government to consider introducing more royal families into the country, possibly at a local level. "The royal family is a huge success story" said Basil Salter, one of the leaders of the consortium of interests promoting the idea, "They promote national unity, a brand awareness for the nation, not to mention that they are a source of a considerable amount of tourist revenue. Yet we seem happy to have only one of these institutions. That's crazy."
One variation of the scheme proposes that these additional royal families might have a role to play in local government and even in the administration of local justice. Historian Piers Lambert described the idea as having some merit: "There is no reason why this should not work. For hundreds of years the German principalities and duchies threw up some interesting and characterful personalities which, if replicated, would be very useful in maintaining a consistently high media profile. Also, these days, royal families are quite popular even in republican countries. Our royalty could, in time, become something we could successfully and profitably export."
